Kos, the third largest of the Dodecanese islands, is situated between the neighbouring islands of Kalymnos and Nisyros. Kos is a very beautiful and impressive island, and a very popular holiday destination in Greece.
The island has an interesting and rich history. Kos is the homeland of "Hyppocates", the world known father of medicine. He lived on the island and taught at the school, based in the ancient temple of Asklipios.
The town of Kos, which is also the capital town and harbour was devastated by a large earthquake in 1933. The town was rebuilt, and this is why it has a modern appearance in comparison with others towns around the Dodecanese.
There are many interesting sites and places to visit in Kos. The Archaeological Museum is well worth visiting, as it the famous ancient site of "Asklipios".
Tigaki is a popular tourist resort that is situated 11km from the capital town. Here you will find a highly organised tourism infrastructure, as well as some great beaches and entertainment facilities.
Another place worth visiting is the town of Kefalos, which used to be the ancient capital of the island. Here visitors will be rewarded with some truly exceptional beaches.
